Offering Controlled Choices

How many of us have made the mistake of saying to a child, “Are you ready to clean up?” or “It’s bedtime, no more TV”. Chances are you will be met with whining and arguing instead of them following the direction.

That’s where Offering Controlled Choices can help! Offering Controlled Choices by giving two options in lieu of a direct command or open ended question will increase the likelihood of your child doing what you ask. Try making them feel like they are in control by saying “Should we have a race to clean up the Legos First OR the Trains First, you choose.” or “Do you want 2 more minutes OR 4 more minutes of TV before we read a bedtime story?”
